Black belt senior world and Pan American jiu jitsu champion and strength and conditioning expert Steve Maxwell came to visit earlier this week to talk about bodyweight and timed static contraction training and go through a workout on the new version of my UXS bodyweight multi-exercise station. We decided to do a short video together when he came back on Tuesday, but ended up talking for two and a half hours.
In the video we cover a lot of topics, including the relative effectiveness, safety, and efficiency of high intensity training versus conventional strength training programs, training for explosiveness, strength training versus steady state activity for cardiovascular conditioning, Steve’s regrets about getting into the kettlebell fad and why he went back to HIT, grip and neck training, and more.
I had a lot of fun talking with Steve and hope you all enjoy the video

Thought this was a great discussions, listened to it twice. I think it is very interesting how a trainer such as Steve with over 50 years of experience who has tried a multitude of different strength training symptoms comes back to HIT as the best way to strength train, worth paying attention I think.
It again highlights to me just how much rubbish there is out there with regard to exercise, I also have played with kettle bells and other systems thinking they will be more effective. Not surprising, all that happened is I spent more time and effort for no added benefit and increase risk injury. Only doing HIT now and not planning to change.
I tried the TSC belted squat, I thought, ‘my legs are good I will just start of with thighs parallel’ LOL I was humbled within 60 seconds and collapsed to floor, this is going to a regular in my training now, only with some what less knee flexion :).
Great Video, really interesting content, thanks for posting
Dave
Thanks David. I am going to be posting an article soon with instructions for building my new TSC belt squat platform.
Bionic Woman = Lindsay Wagner. Just as fun as your observations about Colonel Steve Austin’s trunk not being able to transfer the forces generated by his bionic legs and arm (he also had a bionic eye) is seeing Wonder Woman Lynda Carter pulling a helicopter down to a runway with her lasso – no doubt WW is strong enough to do thousands of pull ups, but she doesn’t weigh as much as the helicopter blades’ lift capacity.
